Breaking Barriers in Healthcare: Jannat’s Journey with Spreeha

Leading Urgent Care Center

Nurse Jannat Ara Happy leads Spreeha’s Urgent Care Center in Baunia. From patient management to safe medication, she does it all.

Women’s healthcare remains one of the most neglected sectors, not due to a lack of need but due to deep-rooted systemic challenges – social stigma, financial constraints, and the lack of female healthcare providers. Spreeha is tackling these challenges head-on by empowering women in healthcare, ensuring that communities receive the care they deserve from women who understand their struggles firsthand.

The story of Jannat Ara Happy – a nurse and frontline health professional at Spreeha – is a powerful reflection of this mission.

From Child Bride to Community Nurse

Born in Habiganj, Sylhet, Jannat grew up in a family where education for girls was not a priority. Despite her dream of becoming a doctor or a nurse, financial and cultural barriers pushed her into child marriage. She endured years of domestic violence, forced labor, and neglect. When she struggled to conceive, her husband abandoned her emotionally and financially. With nowhere else to turn, her sister became her lifeline, helping her escape to Dhaka – the capital city. Divorce soon followed, but so did freedom – a chance to rebuild on her terms.

Divorcing her husband with the help of her elder sister – Jannat came to Dhaka to find freedom and the opportunity to rebuild her life. She learned tailoring to support herself while resuming her education. However, the turning point came with the tragic death of her brother due to medical negligence, which fueled her determination to ensure no patient faced similar suffering.

Jannat pursued a nursing diploma, became a certified nurse, and worked part-time in a hospital, turning her pain into a mission to help and heal others.

Joining Spreeha to serve her community in Baunia, Dhaka

After 10 years of living in the community of Baunia, Dhaka, Jannat’s journey took a transformative turn when she joined Spreeha’s Urgent Healthcare Centre in April 2024, where she found not just a job, but a calling – to provide accessible healthcare to those who need it most.

Since joining, she has undergone capacity-building training and gained hands-on experience in urgent care management, quality of care, and healthcare technology. In just nine months, Jannat has served nearly 15,000 patients, showing that she has quickly become a trusted healthcare provider in her community.

What sets her apart is her leadership in a field that is often dominated by men. As one of the very few women leading an urgent care center, Jannat has revolutionized the role, offering not only medical care but a safe, dignified space for women to discuss their health concerns without fear or shame.

At Spreeha’s Urgent Healthcare Center, Jannat provides essential services tailored to the unique needs of her community, including first aid, reproductive health support, and safe medication. With a strong emphasis on quality diagnostic facilities and the use of technology, Jannat ensures that women in her community have better access to health records, enabling informed decisions. Spreeha’s commitment to affordable and dignified care allows Jannat to empower women to take control of their health and well-being, proving that healthcare can be both compassionate and transformative.

Women’s Health Matters: When Women Lead, Communities Thrive

Jannat’s journey – from a survivor of child marriage and domestic violence to a leader in healthcare – demonstrates the transformative power of women’s empowerment. Spreeha’s commitment to women’s healthcare is evident in Jannat’s story, highlighting three key impacts: expanding access to care, empowering frontline female health workers, and driving economic independence. By placing women at the forefront of healthcare, Spreeha creates leadership opportunities and helps women gain financial independence, transforming their lives and their families.

At Spreeha, we believe that women’s leadership in the health sector is a necessity. Through women-led healthcare and economic empowerment, we are building a future where no woman is left behind, and women like Jannat become the changemakers of tomorrow.
